As of March 2008 there are
two different types of vaccines useful against the spread of Avian
Bird Flu". While Bird Flu has infected and killed many birds - poultry
and wild birds included , it has not made the jump across to a strain that can
infect person to person.
People have been infected with Avian H5N1 Bird Flu. Yet luckily the virus has not made the transition to be able to jump from human being to human being. Not yet as of March 2008.
A number of different variants of vaccines to prevent against this likelihood and some experts say probability are either commercially available , being submitted to regulatory authorities or in the development or submission stages.
Sanofi-Aventis has one product approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However this product has limited efficacy and as well must be taken in two large doses.
Sanofi is continuing its ongoing quest with further research and development. In addition Novartis A.G. of Switzerland , Baxter International of the U.S. and C.S.I. of Australia are all following suit.
Currently there is one effective vaccine product which is designed for use in the spread and advance of a potential bird flu epidemic, before the epidemic has actually spread to patients and potential victims of the illness. This drug is manufactured By GlaxoSmithkline PLC named " Prepanddrix".
